Polished and elegant, the Duquesa de Cardona is housed in a 16th-century nobleman's house, which has been sympathetically restored in wood, stone and soft neutral colours. Located right on Passeig de Colom you're walking distance (and certainly cycling) from many of Barcelona's main attractions. Offering impressive views of Barcelona port whilst the road is one of the city's main thoroughfares the window's are well insulated so you don't hear a peep. Rooms are of a good size with little extras such as complimentary cakes and chocolates on arrival, as well as a Nespresso coffee machine. The bathrooms are sleek, with plenty of slate and pretty mosaic tiled floors. Minimalist decor meets Catalan flair. Top tip: opt for a 'Port View' room, not only do these boast the best views, but the rooms at the back of the hotel back onto a communal square, which, being in the centre of town, can get a little noisy in the evenings. Breakfast is a tasty spread with both splurge and healthy options (their delicious pastries make the latter a bit more difficult). The restaurant serves a modern mix of Mediterranean and tapas dishes, plus the rooftop serves drinks and snacks in the summer months. An ideal spot for sundowners. There's also a smart cocktail lounge downstairs, decorated with black and white tiles and photographs, and a grand piano. In the afternoon complimentary snacks and pastries are laid out: in case the day's sightseeing left you a little peckish! The roof terrace affords the best views of the port, and it's well worth a trip up here for a dip in one of its two open-air pools. Small they may be, but perfect for cooling off in the hot summer months. A smart, perfectly located hotel.
